1991 Old Skool Hardcore Vol.2 (2023)

Let's go back to the year 1991. I was only 7 or 8 years old. I was a wee young lad, and I was still listening to pop music. I wasn't aware of this rave scene, that would happen a few years later. But in 1991, I was only into music that was in the top 40. I would only discover the music released in 1991 and 1992 at a later stage, but even in 2023, I am still discovering new music. Songs I've not heard before, or simply ignored (for whatever reason it might be). I always like to take a trip back in time, discover new music, or music I've missed. Or even listen to music from a decade I could not experience, as I wasn't born yet.

So, today's mix is focussed on music released in 1991. Again, I was too damn young (damn you parents, for not conceiving me a few years earlier!), but I can still imagine how awesome it might have sounded when they were released, and how this newly formed rave culture took these tunes to heart, and danced the night away in some dodgy underground club, tunnel, or wherever the convoy of vehicles/humans took you.

But what's in store for us all today? Well, we know the year this mix is focussed on: 1991. But what kind of music? Well, Hardcore music (and no, not the Hardcore Techno kind, the more Rave focussed sound). The tunes selected have got more of an Belgian/Techno influence, according to the DJ behind this mix, Andy Pav, or to use his Soundcloud channels name: ANDY PAV.

Now you want to know the tunes, right? Well, it wouldn't be a review by yours truly without a tracklist (because I wouldn't write one if it didn't have a tracklist):

  1. Trigger - Stratosphere

  2. The Scientist - The Bee

  3. DMS - Exterminate (Day Of The Hardcore)

  4. Outlander - Vamp

  5. Cubic 22 - Night In Motion

  6. Joey Beltram - My Sound

  7. Nitrous - Moonwalk

  8. Shaft - Breakdown

  9. Doc Scott - Surgery (Ordinary Mix)

  10. N-Joi - Malfunction

  11. Bizarre Inc. - Playing With Knives (Quadrant Mix)

  12. Altern-8 - Infiltrate 202

  13. Rhythm Section - Nu Generation (Outta My Face)

  14. After Dark - Cardiac (Sonic Mix)

  15. Razorboy & Mirrorman - Beyond Control

  16. SL2 - The Noise

A proper early Hardcore/Rave mix, with some big anthems. Yes, over the years I did catch up, and heard a lot of these tunes in other mixes and on many compilations, so don't you worry: not a lot of stuff needs catching up to. I am fully aware on how awesome 1991 was.

This is another solid mix by Andy Pav, and I really enjoyed it. And to think that I missed those glorious years due to my age. And also, another thing that might make you think ''I'm getting old'': there's a whole generation out there that have never heard these songs before, or could even acknowledge the music that dominated the world back during the 90s! It is baffling to think that.

But I like to go back in time, and enjoy the music as much as possible. Andy's mix is filled with brilliant songs. Especially the one that is one of my favourite anthems from the early noughties: 'Exterminate (Day Of The Hardcore' by DMS. Brilliant tune.

A solid mix to get us through the day. Hop on the early Rave train, and never get off. Never. You are never too old to listen and experience Hardcore music. Those that do say you do, are non believers. Hardcore will never die!
