DJ Dano. A name you will all know and remember. A legend in the Hardcore scene. And a name that has cropped up in a lot of documentaries I've been watching on YouTube. 3 Voor 12 uploaded this three part documentary about 30 years of Dutch Dance, and Dano was in there. So were a few others, but obviously me being the Hardcore fanatic, I was listening and focussed more on the Hardcore side of our history. And Dano has been very influential in our precious scene.
Many moons ago, 8 to be precise, DJ Promo made two mixes, celebrating two DJs. The first one being The Prophet, and the other one, DJ Dano. 4 hour long mixes with a whole lot of records by each artist. DJ The Prophet's mix was already reviewed a few years ago, but because of Dano's presence in the media lately, I decided to listen to his mix. The 4 hour long monster mix. And it is certainly a monster mix. It made me realise that Dano made more records, more than I ever realised!
Most of us 'oldies' will know him for the biggest Thunderdome song ever, ''Welcome To The Thunderdome''. Many have tried to make an anthem as good as that one, but failed. Nothing can compete to this absolute masterpiece of a record. But let's not underestimate his importance in the scene, there's more you might recognise and love. And that's exactly what happened to me when I was listening to this.
He was obviously part of the mighty Dreamteam, and they were such a huge and important factor for the scene. They were superstar DJs but things didn't end well. If you want to know more, go and explore those documentaries I've watched. Or buy books.
Dano has been a huge player in the scene, and during the 90s he made some epic anthems.

I was too young when Dano dominated the Hardcore scene with his best buddies Gizmo, The Prophet and Buzz Fuzz, nor did I know of anything else that he made besides Hardcore. He 'entered' my life when I started to buy all Thunderdome albums and everything associated with Thunderdome.
If you feel that 4 hours is the perfect length for a mix, this is the one for you. And if you are a fan of Dano, this is certainly all you need to hear. It has had already a lot of plays over the years, but it's always good to share this mix over and over.
To me, Dano has made some epic anthems. Obviously the Thunderdome song is one of the greatest, but so is ''Terror Is Timeless''. ''Nothing To Fear'', ''I'm Gonna Get You'', but the one that stuck with me the most for being daring enough to be extremely different, has to be ''Suckers''. An anthem so underrated, it makes me sad that this song isn't played more often.
The great thing about this mix is the fact that it slowly shows Dano turn into this great Hardcore producer. But he started somewhere, a world that we don't call Hardcore or Gabber. And his roots and background can be heard clearly in this fantastic mix. Not sure how much they smoked when The Prophet and Dano made Vitamin records...''De Ongestelde Flamingo''? Like, WTF?
It's a smashing mix, and it made me realise that Dano deserves more respect from me. A fantastic producer, and it seems to be someone who has lived through the ups and down of the Hardcore scene. Seeing him talk in the documentaries made me want to purchase his book and read more.
But until then, I'm focussing on this mix, and it will go on repeat. Big mix. I'd wish DJ Promo made more of these. Maybe he has, and I've not noticed. But so far he's made two wicked appreciation mixes. More please.
