Gerry Shields Birthday Stream in aid of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) (2024)

CALM. I had never heard of this organisation before, but after reading a bit more about what they represent, And it's something close to my heart too, as I have been through the darkness, and suffered myself. Thankfully I did receive some help, and underwent some form of treatment through the NHS, but not everyone can be as 'lucky' as myself. Not many people know and acknowledge the struggles people face on a daily basis, and that's a pity. We don't help each other as much as we would hope. And the NHS is already under a lot of pressure. It is difficult, that's for damn sure.

Mental health issues aren't something you can brush off that easily,. It is something that we need to understand, and face. You might not struggle, but if you open your eyes, you will find someone near you who might just need a moment of your time. Just to talk to you, to be listened to, to not be fully understood, but just to be listened to. For me it was important that there were people there for more, who would listen. I spoke to specialists who had no clue who I was, what kind of life I had, and how I got there. But they listened And to me that was the most important thing, because after a while (many sessions), I heard myself speak, and I started to understand what it is that needed to be done.

Not many of my friends know this, but I was suicidal. Don't even know if my family knows that I was, but I was in a deep hole, and I couldn't get myself out of it. I knew that if I were to stay in that hole, after a while I would never be able to get out of it, and I would remain in it. I had the hardest task to say to my wife that I needed help, and that's what made me get into contact with people. Specialists. And they gave me just enough to still be in the hole, but for me to make an exit strategy: I was going to get out of the hole, one way or another.

My wife stood by me during the whole process, and I am glad that she did. She was the one that took my hand, and we are now so far away from that hole, it's not even a hole anymore. I poured concrete in that hole, and I'll never get back there again. And no, it's not like the standard UK approach to potholes (fill it now, and next week the hole is back). It's my approach. That hole is still there in my head, to remind me of what I have, and what I went through.

Music was important to me to. Music gets me through a lot. Someone called Gerry Shields, he had organised a birthday bash, to celebrate his 62nd birthday. And he's being open about the struggles he has been through. To celebrate his birthday, and to underline the importance of music to get people through the darkest of time, he had a few DJs play some sets for his birtdhay bash. One of them is the mix I have found only a few days ago, and I have absorbed this mix like never before.

It is a mix you should definitely listen to, and if you've got time, you could also donate to CALM?

This is an amazing tracklist. Yes, the set is three and a half hours long, but you get something in return. Endless joy from these awesome records. And there's a lot of them in here.

This mix is filled with Progressive Trance anthems, and of course the classics are in here too. And as you can see, there's a lot of them, and they all make me happy. All of them. But it's the first tune in this mix that paved the way for 3 1/2 hours of madness. The only Junkie XL song I actually like (well, it's not his song, but a remix he'd done).

It was made for a good cause, and we should all support it. And it is true that music is powerful enough to change people's perspective. Music is that powerful. To me it's everything. And this mix has taken me to Heaven and back. What a wonderful mix with a lot of excellent tunes. It takes me back to when I was a young lad. So many awesome records. Credit where credit is due. This is an astonishing mix. Few tiny mixing errors, but nothing to write home about.

I cannot pick one record as my favourite, there are a few; ''Deep Inside'', ''Buenos Aires'', ''Dirty Sticky Floor'', ''Tundra''. I find these records the best in this mix. What about you? Which records are your favourite?

I do find that this mix comes with an important message, a message we should all support. So do the right thing: listen to this mix, and check out CALM's page for more information. It is a wonderful cause, and I hope that we can eradicate this issue once and for all. No one has to suffer. No one should suffer. Let's support each other as much as we can!

I hope it was a great birthday bash, but if it was as good as this mix, it must have been a splendid one!
