I grew up in South Limburg, in a small town called Heerlen. We weren't know for much besides being a former mining location. Most of the coals came from South Limburg. But we weren't know for Hardcore music. In the Netherlands there was always a fierce battle between the two biggest cities: Amsterdam and Rotterdam. One had Rotterdam Records representing their city and their approach to Hardcore, and the other had Mokum records, representing the A'dam sound. Being a simple idiot from Heerlen I did not see the fuss surrounding it: as long as it sounded great, I was a happy gabber.
Over the years you start to learn what happened during the 90s, but to me these two labels still remained awesome, no matter what stuff happened behind the scenes. And back in 2023 I'd already reviewed a Rotterdam Records megamix made by Jason S, and now he's back with a mix dedicated to Mokum. Obviously most people will know Mokum because Chosen Few released a few big hitters on that label, but so many more anthems were released on that label.
Yes, ''Name Of The DJ'' is probably one of the biggest hits to have ever been made, but Mokum has more to offer. And you will go on the same journey as I am right now. I've never delved too much into labels, as I wasn't concerned which labels released what, as long as the music was awesome enough to make me dance until my feet bled. Over the years I have been going to Discogs and read all about certain labels and seen their extensive back catalogue, and today we are focussing on a few of the releases on the mighty Mokum.
Not saying that all their releases have been a success. ''Abba-Gabba'' by Riot Nation wasn't one of them, anything by Hakkuhbar, and it goes on, but they have had a lot of awesome records released on their label, and they are still going on strong. One of UKHC's Powerstomp producer I have been following for years, M-Project, has had a few releases on this label. And the list goes on. Still a very influential label, if you'd ask me.
Jason S, the megamix master, selected 50 of Mokum's finest records, and crammed it into a 75 minute long mix. Is it worth your time, or worth putting it in the trash?

Wow, didn't know all these were released on Mokum records?! Wow, it has opened my eyes slightly. Obviously I knew the big hits, like Technohead and Party Animals and some of Chosen Few and Tellurian records, but I didn't know Lenny Dee & Ralphie Dee had some releases on the label too, and also Scott Brown?
Being a Hardcore/Gabber enthusiast, I can hear the difference between music from Rotterdam and Amsterdam. But I liked them both equally as much. Obviously the biggest hits that took the world by storm were released on Mokum (''I Wanna Be A Hippy'' anyone?), but the label has had more successful songs. Of course ''Name Of The DJ''. That remains an anthem and a half. But the one track that might have beaten my number one from this list isn't even on here: ''Guyver'' by Tellurian. Still to this day one of the most slept on anthems.
But I might say something now that will confuse people. My favourite record in this mix, It's ''The Box'' by High Energy. I highly recommend that record to anyone who is eager to hear some early Hardcore music. I love that song. And I've never even watched Hellraiser, the film. Can you believe it?
The majority of these records did become favourites to many, and I do love the majority of Mokum records, and I'm happy they still proceed to this day. And Jason S has done a remarkable job, capturing the Mokum sound from back in the day. It's a splendid 75 minutes. I'm in Mokum paradise now, or should I say 'Chosen' paradise now?
