Promo & Boris Valeo Live @ Mysteryland 1998, Lingebos Vuren, 04-07-1998

The year is 1998. The glorious year of 1998. Do you remember what happened back in that specific year? Nearly 24 years ago a majestic event happened you might have heard of: Mysteryland Outdoor! And this Dutchman was there, raving the night away. I was only 14, and thought I'd conquered the world already, but when I stepped into the marvellous land called Mysteryland, my whole life changed drastically. It was their eight event, and I was there, raving the day away among 25.000 ravers (or was it 20.000? can't remember). The line-up was something else, and still holds its value to this day...

Panic, Waxweazle, Prophet, 3 Steps Ahead, Masochist, Promo, Neophyte, Buzz Fuzz, Gizmo, Estroe, Michel de Hey, Da Goose, Steve Rachmad, Remy, Dano, Omar Santana, Thimbles, Erick-E, Yves DeRuyter, Spider Willem, PCP, Franky Jones, Rob Gee, The Darkraver, Roog, Mike Dunn, Joost van Bellen, Jurgen, Jean, Lady Dana, Drokz, Manu Le Malin, Akira, Noizer, Cixx, Paul Elstak, Pavo, and those are just a handful of names. Oh, and DJ Martijn Krabbe. WTF was he doing there?

I want to say that I can remember like it was yesterday, but the more years pass by, the less I remember. A few sets I do remember are 3 Steps Ahead, PCP, Rob Gee, The Masochist, and the rest is a blur. Remember, I was only 14 and all on my own (long story though, don't have the patience to explain it), and with a few hundred guilders in my pocket. I'm 38 now, and I've got difficulties to remember what I ate last night. But what I do remember is that it was my first big rave, and it opened doors for me. Or, I opened doors, as I was bitten by the rave bug.

After the event, ID&T released the CD and VHS (who remembers those), and on the first disc it contained the livesets from both Promo, and Boris Valeo. Want to know something stupid? I always thought Boris was Promo with a Russian hat on. But yeah, that could be found on the event CD, and on the second disc it contained a few livesets from 3 Steps Ahead, The Masochist, Neophyte, Rob Gee & The Natas, and Marc Acardipane feat Da TMC. I still highly recommend this disc, as it's my most precious one in my collection.

So to see the first disc being presented as a liveset on Soundcloud isn't technically true. Yes it was, but it was taken from Thunderdome Live Recorded @ Mystery Land 1998. Whatever you might call this, at least it's Promo, and Boris Valeo live! And that's all that matters.

Now that's a tracklist and a half, isn't it? But it's not just the tracklist that does it, but the memories I've got. And there are plenty of those! My first rave ever, and we even beat Argentina during a football match (not into football, but still ace to hear thousands of ravers scream 'HOLLAND' out loud).

The tracks were so 11997-1998-ish. And damn good. Both Promo and Boris Valeo did their best to get the crowd to loose themselves, and even in 2022 I'm sitting here with a smile on my face, as I know what happened at Mysteryland, and how awesome it was. These two sets do reflect exactly my first rave, and they both played the finest anthems out there.

When I first bought the CD, I wasn't sure about Promo's first few tracks. As they were a tad soft, a bit mellow. But slowly he was working toward a moment when the beats, bass, and melody would burst through the speakers. And I've grown accustom over the years to Promo's mix.

Boris does what Boris does best. Wicked intro, and then the darker Hardcore anthems. Don't actually know what happened to the act Boris Valeo, but thankfully it's been capture on disc, and goes with me forever and forever.

I still love these sets. Were they perfect? From a nostalgic point of view, yes. Memories. You cannot take them away. They will always be with me. And us ravers screaming HOLLAND. Goosebumps.

Best track Promo? 'Welcome To The Thunderdome'

Best track Boris Valeo? Easy, 'Simbiosis'

Fuck, where did those 24 years go to?
