I was tagged in a post the other day, and it was an interesting tag. It was to have a listen to DJ Protocol's latest mix, which wasn't focussed on the usual UK Hardcore or Happy Hardcore, Breakbeat Hardcore or Drum and Bass, but this time it was focussed on Masters Of Hardcore. Which is quite unusual, but nothing too strange. Hardcore is a powerful and addictive sound you cannot ignore, so Protocol decided to make a mix, roughly 1 hour and 46 minutes long.
Me being a Hardcore enthusiast, I had to jump on. I was kind of hoping that it would be a mix dedicated to the early MOH anthems (or compilations), but this mix is more focussed on the current sound. More newer sounding Hardcore anthems. And even though my heart beats as fast as a Hardcore beat, I am not into the current Hardcore anymore. I don't know why, but maybe it's because of my age. I do prefer the early MOH stuff, which is a billion times better. But I still had to give it a go, right? Got tagged in a post..
So I gave it a go. And I don't know how to respond to this. I normally aren't lost for words, but today I am. Nothing wrong with the mixing of this mix, that's top quality (as expected), but it's the tracks, and the state of 'Hardcore'. I honestly am a Hardcore fan since 1993, but this might be the time for me to remain in the past, and not venture in the present day Hardcore. I'll explain it after you've read the tracklist:
Dune - Forever Young (Re-Style Remix)
Angerfist & Dyprax - The Pearly Gates
Korsakoff & Outblast - Unleash The Beast (Angerfist Remix)
Re-Style - The Conquest Of Fury Anthem
Re-Style - Get It Crackin’ 2013 Mix
Angerfist & Outblast feat Tha Watcher - The Voice Of Mayhem
Evil Activites & Mad Dog - Immortal (Masters Of Hardcore 2022 Anthem)
3rdWav - The 3rdWav (Destructive Tendencies Remix)
3rdWav & Hatta - Break The Cycle
Re-Style - Wasteland (Bassleader 2012 Anthem)
Nosferatu - Oppression
3rdWav - Switch It Up
Outblast - Bassleader Anthem
Re-Style & Cammie - Kryptonite
3rdWav - Universal Nation
3rdWav - Walk Alone
Re-Style - Towards The Sun
Charlie Lownoise & Re-Style - City Streets
Re-Style - Spring
Tha Playah & Neophyte- Still No 1 (Nosferatu Remix)
Re-Style & Korsakoff - Leap Of Faith
Ophidian - Bring On The Orchestra (Harmony Of Hardcore Anthem 2019)
Nosferatu & Angerfist- Sinster Connetion
3rdWav - Lonely (In My Home)
Re-Style & Rayvolt - Breathless
Nosferatu & Maintain - Birds Of Prey
Unfussed - Make It Burn
Ophidian - Dark Euphoria (Masters Of Hardcore Anthem 2022)
3rdWav feat Turner Dye - Nothing Else Matters
Nosferatu - When Angels Cry
Oh boy, what a tracklist. I wasn't expecting this, and I don't know how to recover from this. I just don't feel the music coming at me, moving me to my core. I feel so far removed from Hardcore now, if this is the current state of Hardcore. I've listened to many mixes, but the tracks in Protocol's mix aren't my thing. And what a song to start with: probably the worst song ever. And turned into this monstrosity when remixed. Boy, not a good start for me.
There are some good songs on here, but unfortunately the majority of these songs aren't for me. And I'm not a fan of Re-Style's music. Protocol is a fan, and 3rdWav. Not heard of them before, but it looks and sounds OK. But not hard enough to get me from the bar to the dancefloor. Re-Style's music is a really let down. Boring music.
Yeah, as much as I appreciate a tag, I happily listen to a mix, and share my opinion. As said, the mix itself is good, but the songs are for the most part, horrendous. Protocol has made mixes better than this one, based upon their tracks. This is not my favourite Protocol mix. Hell, he's made much better ones with far more superior songs. Sorry Protocol.
If it was a mix dedicated to the first 10 years of MOH, I would listen to it straight away. But the present day MOH sound isn't my love. Maybe I'm getting too old to accept changes in music.
